It's Perfect Isn't It? The Lives (or is it Lies) We See On Facebook.

It's perfect isn't it.... the lives we see on Facebook... usually happy faces of people doing fun stuff ALL of the time. This time of the year you see pictures of Santa, Gingerbread houses, and an ungodly amount of cookies being baked.
I suppose your newsfeed will relate to your friends and interests. Mine is a nice mixture of toddlers, families, and runners posting pics of their latest runs and races. And from the outside looking in, it looks (other than the occasional 'I am stressed rant') pretty darn perfect... these lives.... these people posting their daily adventures.
But I have to stop and ask you, is it? Yes, there is a gorgeous picture of a smiling family, but maybe what we didn't see was the major meltdown from everyone (including Mommy screaming please please just cooperate) before a decent picture was finally taken. Oh, and those cookies look lovely, but maybe we didn't see the ones that were burned or an unrecognizable shape. And the awesome run you just read about? Well maybe it was a perfect morning, or then again maybe they had a huge fight with their spouse/significant other/kid before the race and their run wasn't as perfect as it sounded.
And sometimes because we are bombarded with these seemingly perfect lives, we start focusing on what we feel we are missing in ours. So if this is you, I encourage you to take a moment and re-direct your thoughts. Yeah, maybe Pinterst Penny knows how to create some to-die-for desserts and crafts. You have some talents and things going for you that maybe Pinterest Penny and others don't.
I realize that no one wants to hear that someone is having a tough time. Gasp, she just put she was struggling today. I can't believe she said that. And true, some of us (myself included) share a little too much through social media. But I think it's also ok to keep it real. My life certainly isn't perfect.
Today, we made our first Gingerbread house. I couldn't figure out where I needed to put the frosting to make the house stay together. Hubby helped me out. People looking at the picture on facebook didn't see that, or how I cut the hole too big in the frosting bag, or the little candy balls rolling everywhere.

Did we have fun? Sure, but this picture doesn't represent the behind the scenes or our morning before this happy moment.

So the next time you are scrolling through your newsfeed, and you start to feel a little inadequate with your lack of skill or activities, take a moment to remember that what you see isn't always how it 'went down'. And you have a lot (probably more than you realize) to be thankful for.

  1. AMEN!!! That's why half the time you don't see me posting because of all all the craziness that lead to some of those "perfect" moments. Although I posted the pictures of the holes we put in the ceiling with the Christmas tree when I posted the pics:) I try to be as transparent as possible and stay positive.

  3. So true! I get anxious just looking at Facebook sometimes, realizing that my life isn't perfect and as great as everyone else's. I'm glad to see someone being real.

    1. And maybe it's just me, but I have a harder time around holidays with feeling I'm missing out.

  4. SO TRUE!! Sometimes I know for a fact that someone's child is having a horrible day and then I see the mom post "my little angel" and combine it with a picture of him doing something nice. I feel as though I do the opposite. I feel like if I post something about my son that I am bragging, and I don't want to brag. I seem to always post complaints, "My son is driving me crazy. I just want quietness!" " Worst day ever...my son won't do anything I ask" etc... Maybe I could do better at being MORE positive as opposed to just negative nancy all the time. I love your post and honesty!

  5. It is so true. Great post. We are all gorgeous & photogenic, with picture perfect families that are always all smiles...at least on Facebook. In real life, I am in sweat pants with colored rice all over the living room floor yelling at my husband for giving my daughter Doritos, that my daughter is now shoving in the VCR.

  7. I love the anti-perfect posts and try to share one a week of the kids crying, something not going right, or a funny tweet to a day gone wrong. Misery loves company and it's just as fun to share what's not working as what is.

2 Weeks Post Mohs Surgery

May 26, 2021 3:40pm  Finally, the phone call that I'd been waiting on. It was the Medical Center. ( Finally, we can schedule my surgery. ) She tells me who she is, and then tells me that she has a cancellation for tomorrow. ( Me stammering... )  "Ok, but I was thinking the end of June."   Then I hear "We just had a moment to look at your file. We really don't think that you should wait. We really think you should come in tomorrow at 8:15am" ( Me stammering again ) "Ok, I'll be there."  Wait, what? My mind is all over the place. I'm supposed to work. How am I going to get our son to school? Will my husband be able to go with me on such short notice. I expected this to be the end of June, not tomorrow. I'm not prepared! I was overcome with emotion.  May 26, 2021 Surgery Day I woke up at 1am with a horrible headache. By the time we arrived at the surgery center, I was definitely a bundle of nerves. I got checked in, went through the usual ...

Feel All the Feels Then Deal

Not what I expected when the phone rang. It was a routine dermatology appointment.  "Do you have any concerns?" “Yes, a small spot on my face. It comes and goes. Two weeks ago it had disappeared (again). So I'm actually glad that it’s back.”  It was the size of a pin head. It was teeny tiny. A nuisance, but not something that really seemed to bother me. “I suspect that it’s skin cancer.”  “So, we just burn if off, right?” “No, it needs to be cut out and sent to the lab.” I was not prepared for this. It’s on my lip! She’s going to cut a hole in my lip! She warns me that the shot is going to hurt and possibly a lot. She tells me this several times. (I’m thinking surely it can’t be that bad.)  I was wrong.  It hurt.  A lot.  I’m creeped out at the thoughts of her taking a chunk off of my face at the top of my lip. I’m even more creeped out as she tells me she’s going to burn it to stop the bleeding. Time and time again I hear the sizzle and the smell is n...

It's Been a Hot Minute

It's been a hot minute since I've written anything.... over a year. Between being a mom, full time student, and a substitute teacher during a pandemic, writing hasn't been a priority. More than once,  I've felt like I was in survival mode with classes. I didn't expect early block  to be so intense.  I admit that I broke down and cried several times this semester with feeling overwhelmed. But, I endured until the end, and I got straight A's for the semester. I'm proud of myself that I didn't give up. I am enrolled in 2 summer class, and 4 fall classes and studying for standardized tests that I must pass before I can begin my student internship.  I will be close to 50 when I graduate. Am I too old to do this? Who starts a career at 50????? I guess I do. I don't know what's going to happen when I graduate. I do know that I am enjoying the course work, and I'm enjoying being able to put what I have learned into practice as a substitute.  This sch...
